This episode is a little bit different, as it’s our first episode which doesn’t focus on someone’s experience moving to and living in Luxembourg. A few weeks back I wrote an article about plastic waste in Luxembourg for RTL Today. One of my colleagues sent me a link to a report which showed that Luxembourg is the second worst offender in Europe when it comes to producing plastic waste – a whopping 52kg per person and year, compared to the EU average of 31kg.
The article caused quite a stir on social media, and commenters shared ideas for reducing our reliance on plastics. One thing that kept coming up in the comments was Ouni, Luxembourg’s first packaging-free grocery store. Ouni first opened its doors in 2016, and carries a broad selection of food, personal hygiene, and cleaning products all sold without packaging.
I contacted Ouni to see if they would be interested in appearing on the podcast, and while several members of staff were kind enough to volunteer I ended up talking to Fredrika earlier this month. Fredrika not only works in the shop, but is generally very knowledgeable when it comes to how we can all reduce our reliance on packaging and other sources of environmental pollution.
Fredrika tells us about Ouni, what they do, and what they sell, but also shares her thoughts on how each of us can reduce our environmental footprint.
